Ice Follies 2025

"The Near North Mobile Media Lab in North Bay has partnered with New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) in the presentation of five audio pieces by Canadian artists Shaughn Martel, Lina Choi, Genevieve Kiessling, Kyle Vanderlaan and Stephanie Dupuis. The pieces use ice sounds recorded on Lake Nipissing and Trout Lake as well as in the case of Lina Choi the St. Lawrence River in Montreal. The pieces were created for the 2025 Ice Follies Festival in North Bay. Photo by Alejandra Lara."

"Home is What I Call the Other Place When I'm Not There" (2024)

This piece is an interactive audio installation that uses a 40 foot tape loop shared between two tape players. On one side participants record themselves answering prompted questions about travel to and from a place they may call "home" but do not necessarily live in, or frequent. The recording then travels the length of the loop to another tape player that plays the recordings out loud. The erase head is removed to layer the recordings atop one another, creating an ever expanding audio collage.

Stoningham Audio Experiment (2023)

Beginning with the a muted section of the film All That Heaven Allows(1955), I reconstructed the sound effects, and music to match the vintage feel of this film.

EMF Turntable (2020)

EMF Turntable is a sound sculpture and musical instrument that utilizes the electromagnetic frequencies of personal electronic devices to make sounds. The circuit originally designed by Jonas Gruska for field recording is mounted as a stylus that reads various devices being spun on a lazy susan. By spinning the lazy suzan like a DJ turntable I can manipulate the sounds being read by the circuit. Read sounds will be run through multiple guitar pedals for effects and looping creating musical layered texture and rhythm.
